Existing Conditions

  • The structural integrity of the fire bays at FS1 has been deteriorating. Floors have crumbled and steel supports have been added as a temporary fix to hold up the floors on which the fire apparatus sits. The bays are now inspected regularly by a structural engineer to determine their viability.
  • Roof leaks are affecting storage areas, clean rooms, and dormitories. Air purifiers have now been installed in the dormitories to protect firefighters from illness.
  • Damage to the floor and ceilings are noticeable: especially the exposed rebar resulting from spalling around the piping. Electrical systems are out of date. The generator does not meet today’s code requirements, nor is it sound attenuated, which negatively impacts the fire department and its neighbors.
  • Firefighting gear is housed in the apparatus bay instead of a designated storage area. This setup does not allow for safe decontamination of gear and equipment. Medical supplies and office space share the operations area used for training and meetings, which limits mobility, efficiency, and privacy.
  • Common areas (dining, sleeping, restrooms) are inadequate to meet the needs of firefighters and administrative personnel assigned to Station 1. The entire fire station is inaccessible to people with disabilities.
