NFIRS Explained – National Fire Incident Reporting System

Purpose – Fire Department utilize this reporting system to track and manage apparatus, personnel and casualty information, document the full range of department activity, and justify budgets with summary and statistical data.

Coding system is broken down into 9 categories or series (100 to 900)

100      Fires

  • Building fires, cooking fires, chimney or flue fire, trash fire inside a building

200      Overpressure explosion, Overheat – No Fire

  • Overpressure rupture from steam, air or gas with no fire

300      Rescue & EMS Incidents

  • Medical assist, Motor vehicle accident with injuries, any medical intervention

400      Hazardous Condition – No Fire

  • Hazardous Materials spills and releases

500     Service Calls

  • Lock outs, Lift assists, Smoke problem,
  • Cover assignment – mutual aid to another town to cover their station

600      Good Intent Calls

  • Dispatched and cancel enroute
  • Dispatch and nothing found on arrival
  • Steam mistaken as smoke

700      False Alarms & False Calls

  • Malicious, mischievous false alarms
  • Fire alarm activation due to malfunction

800      Severe weather and Natural Disasters

  • Flood or wind storm investigation

900      Special Incident Type

  • Citizen complaint
