Fire & Life Safety EducationThe Student Awareness of Fire Education (S.A.F.E.) Program is a state initiative to provide fire and life safety education programs in grades K-12.

The mission of SAFE is to enable students to recognize the dangers of fire and educate
students on safe behavior.

Key Fire Safety Behaviors

There are 23 Key Fire Safety Behaviors that should be taught in age and developmentally appropriate ways, including:

  • Stop, Drop, and Roll
  • Making and Practicing Home Escape Plans or (EDITH)
  • Reporting Fires and Emergencies (911)
  • Crawl Low Under Smoke
  • Smoke Detector awareness
  • Kitchen and home Safety
  • Holiday Safety
  • Get out and stay out
  • Friendly Firefighter

SAFE

The Westwood Fire Department organizes tours for children, runs an annual Open House, and works with the senior citizens in Westwood to promote safety and Fire education.

SAFE also visits the Westwood schools and Council on Aging presenting appropriate safety classes.
