Town of Westwood GIS

Westwood GIS,
The Town of Westwood’s
Geographic Information System (GIS)

Our goal is to provide the most accurate and up to date spatial data possible for town departments and residents. We are responsible for both updating and maintaining GIS data, as well as providing assistance on using the GIS, and a wide range of analysis and cartographic functions within the town.

What is a GIS?

A Geographic Information System is a computer based mapping system used for the creation, storage, and maintenance of geographic (spatial) digital data. The data is organized in layers and can be used for analysis and mapping for Town projects. Each layer has information (called attributes) in a database that relates to each data set. Examples of GIS data layers include base mapping (roads, buildings, water bodies, etc), utilities (water lines, sewer system, street lights), and Assessors tax parcels.

Westwood GIS, which is part of the Information Technology Department, has offices located at both the Town Hall and at the High School, providing GIS services for all Municipal departments and Westwood Public Schools. GIS has become a valuable tool to many departments.
